At the age of five, Amber Cruey’s one working kidney began to fail. She went into respiratory arrest and was flown by helicopter from Roanoke to the University of Virginia Medical Center. It soon became clear that Amber needed a kidney transplant, and her father, James, was a perfect match.On a warm September day, Margaret Cruey brought her husband and daughter to Charlottesville for surgery. The transplant was a success, but the recovery time was lengthy, and the Ronald McDonald House became their home away from home.
